The Problem of Abundance


Whether it is the mimic attitude of the society or whether it is short sighted vision of the budding youngsters or whether it is a problem of corporation of education, whatever may be the reason, education system in India is on the verge of an implosion with a problem of abundance.

India produces around 750,000 engineering graduates every year and this number is increasing at a rate of 5% per year. On the other hand, China produces around 600,000 engineering graduates every year. Now before you start feeling proud about us beating China based on this stat, here is another tidbit. According to NASSCOM and McKinsey out of the total number of engineering graduates of India who pass out every year, only 26% of them are “employable”, which means the rest of them either don’t have sufficient subject knowledge or fall back in communication skills required in this globalised world village.

So why is that only 1 out of 4 engineering graduates worth a job? Elementary, Dr.Watson.

The number of engineering colleges in India is growing at a staggering rate of 19%. This has eventually led to a problem of abundance. Right here in Andhra Pradesh around 43000 engineering seats {although conflicting numbers have been on circulation putting it above 1 lakh} were left vacant after the completion of the counselling process and Tamil Nadu is close behind AP with 30000 seats left unfilled. With less than adequate faculty, ill-furnished class rooms and disappointing infrastructure, one can’t expect the students to be on par with their counterparts from institutions like IITs, NITs or for that matter even the institutions from their zone. So this tells us that the quality of the graduates is indirectly proportional to the increase of engineering seats and hence the lesser number of students are worth employment.

Let us understand what’s in store for these students. After completion of engineering ,students either look out for jobs or opt for higher education { The percentage of students going for business at this stage is very minimal}.Majority of the institutions fall behind in providing adequate campus placements opportunities to their students .Consider the IITs for that matter. The number of students from IITs recruited by top MNC’s in 2008 was 3031 were as last year it was 1606.Post graduation seems to be the next bubble for these engineering graduates. As many as 105450 students have opted for MS in the United States this year unmindful of the macroeconomic problems that country is facing. The number of students going to other countries like Germany, UK and others is not far behind. The fact that US is in need of engineering graduates is a benefit for our students but not many of these students can afford the fee or living expenses. M.Tech seems to be another path for engineering students who want to hone their skills in their field of interest. But there are only around 10000 M.Tech seats available for the 230,000 students who appeared for GATE this year. MBA is another option for the students and around 50% of the total applicants for CAT and 80% of total IIM admits are engineers.

These numbers indicate that the common belief of the parents that engineering is a safe path to success for their children is under grave danger. So why don’t they encourage the students for other opportunities. This brings us to the theme of this article. Why not civil services? To the ones who wonder what exactly these civil servants do, I’ll try to simplify their job. People elect their leaders and they expect him/her to solve their problems, look after the welfare activities, maintain law and order and so on. But the person you elect is a human too, he can’t be at every place at the same time, or may not be vigilant enough to find solutions to all problems or on top of it, may not be interested in your problems at all! This is where civil servants come into picture. They act as the bridge between the people and the elected bodies. They execute the ideas of the government and supervise the various schemes, activities and other social issues. The govt gives them the funds and they use them by channelizing the priorities. So this means, Civil servants are the people behind the screen who work for the welfare of the people. They work for the Government of India not the parliament.

It has a lot to do with the sense of status, power, recognition, responsibility and opportunities that this career gives you. The charisma of civil services cannot be found in any other profession and this is the primary reason for many of the aspirants gearing themselves to achieve the tag of IAS/IPS,etc.Civil Services

From addressing micro issues like administration, tax collection, rural development to tackling huge natural disasters, the spectrum of service that an officer can render is amazing. IAS/IPS is the best career for the people of age group 21-24. This is the age group where one has the blood to bend their bodies and concentrate on their skills to achieve success. And if one can use their potential and implement the thoughts the hurdle of clearing the CSAT can’t be too tough.

Engineering graduates will have greater chances to clear the CSAT than their counterparts. Earlier the preliminary test was named Civil Services Exam included two examinations, one on general studies worth 150 marks and the second on one of the 23 optional subjects worth 300 marks. But from 2011 it is called Civil Service Aptitude Test {CSAT}. It is intended to focus on analytical abilities and understanding rather than their ability to memorise. This is where engineering graduates will have an upper hand over others considering their prominence in analytical and aptitude skills. With topics such as number systems, English language comprehension and other interpersonal skills engineering graduates shouldn’t face too much difficulty in clearing this test as they would have already gained sufficient amount of practice in these areas throughout their engineering program.

Albeit one has a splendid academic background, flashing communication skills and brilliant aptitude skills, he/she has to understand that the zeal of becoming an IAS or IPS is what defines the whole process. The greater the zeal, the higher the motivation of being a civil servant and this is what pushes you to the top of the table and eventually taste success. This is not a job that you do for yourself and your family; this is a job that you do for the welfare of the people of this country. So before one jumps into this fray, understand the difficulties involved in this profession and if you have the motivation to beat the best then you have won half the battle.

Pragnya’13

Pragnya, the national level technical symposium of GRIET has over years proven itself to be a platform for the students to challenge and sharpen their technological intellect. Pragnya’13 was conducted on 3rd,4th and 5th of October 2013. Keeping up the standards set by our predecessors, Pragnya’13 turned out to be a spectacular event.It was the result of the undying efforts and hard work put in by the volunteers and organizers who contributed in every way towards the making of Pragnya’13. We had a wide range of technical and non-technical events which kept the students engrossed.We had participants from all over the state for the Paper Presentations and various other activities with as many as 3000 people taking part.All in all it was a successful event conducted by our college and hope the tradition continues.
